For great days out head for the stunning countryside of the Lake District, Lancashire and the Peak District or make the most of the city’s transport links to visit local market towns, the vibrant City of Liverpool (European Capital of Culture 2008), sporting Sheffield, or the historic cities of Chester or York.
North of the city – around the towns of Bury, Bolton, Wigan, Oldham and Rochdale – you’ll find more than 500 square miles of inspiring countryside, crisscrossed by historical waterways and dotted with picturesque towns and fascinating attractions that make for great days out of the city.

The Lake District
The world famous Lake District, in Cumbria is inspirational at any time of year. From the spring daffodils immortalised by Wordsworth to the golden cloak of autumn's leaves, from sailing boats on sparkling summer lakes to the majestic snow-capped fells of winter.
Take in the views, breathe in the fresh air, watch nature work its magic through the changing seasons and experience what has been an inspiration to generations of artists and writers alike. Whether it's a gentle stroll or a challenging hike, with pathways winding through valleys, over fells and along lake shores, you could be forgiven for getting lost in the view.
The Peak District
The surrounding Peak District is most beautiful and spectacular country, with inspiring history and heritage set amid awesome natural landscapes.
The towns and villages of Derbyshire are different and these include Buxton, Bakewell, Matlock and Derby. The countryside is unique.
